Alcohol kills more than AIDS, TB or violence

With statistics like these, one is compelled to wonder why on earth alcohol is even legal:

Alcohol causes nearly 4 percent of deaths worldwide... binge drinking is a problem in many developed countries... Yet alcohol control policies are weak and remain a low priority for most governments despite drinking's heavy toll on society from road accidents, violence, disease, child neglect and job absenteeism... Approximately 2.5 million people die each year from alcohol related causes... The harmful use of alcohol is especially fatal for younger age groups and alcohol is the world's leading risk factor for death among males aged 15-59... In Russia and the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), every fifth death is due to harmful drinking... Binge drinking, which often leads to risky behavior, is now prevalent in Brazil, Kazakhstan, Mexico, Russia, South Africa and Ukraine, and rising elsewhere... Alcohol is a causal factor in 60 types of diseases and injuries... Its consumption has been linked to cirrhosis of the liver, epilepsy, poisonings, road traffic accidents, violence, and several types of cancer, including cancers of the colorectum, breast, larynx and liver... Yet not enough countries use effective policy options to prevent death, disease and injury attributable to alcohol consumption...

Since consumers can't rely on government to protect us, we must protect ourselves.

 

Alcohol is just another type of concentrated food which requires proper combining with other foods in order to minimize its harmful effects. It also must be balanced out with at least one serving of fruits or vegetables for every 8 ounces of drink to maintain a decent standard of health.

 

Malt beverages (beer, porter, ale) may be taken with starch meals, not protein; dry wines may be taken with protein meals, not starch. Whiskey, gin, and rum are okay with either. Other drinks including milk should be taken with fruits or veggies only.

 

Drinking, like all other concentrated food intake, is best done in moderation.

from folks wondering why alcohol is legal while marijuana is not...
